How can mid-market companies overcome their main ecommerce challenges?

Mid-market companies already have high and constantly growing business complexity - close to enterprises - however they don’t have enterprise-scale budgets. In terms of ecommerce, that means all projects should be very results-focused, provide good ROI and still deliver a reliable basis for further growth.

  • Lack of required deep expertise in ecommerce

  • Inflexible solutions don’t allow you to deliver changes fast and  easily change direction

  • A predictable implementation budget is critical

Mid-market companies are in the middle of a transformation in terms of human resources when the expertise of universal specialists becomes not enough to satisfy business complexity, and the company still doesn't have the opportunity to hire people with the required deep business and technical ecommerce expertise.

Inflexible multi-tenant, closed-code solutions or software with monolithic architecture makes impossible to grow long term with the velocity needed to expand your business. Changes become more and more expensive or impossible, and bring more and more risks, so each new improvement takes more time to deliver.

Having a predictable budget for ecommerce implementation projects is critical for mid-market companies. It is highly desirable to be able to keep control of the implementation progress and roadmap, and to be able to regularly evaluate the value of desirable features and spend money on the most valuable ones.

Selecting a solution, which doesn’t fit, and struggling with quality of the implementation
Company cannot follow the pace of the market and loses opportunities
When a project goes over budget, companies sacrifice other valuable investments to continue it

To properly run eommerce projects of scale, it's essential to attract ecommerce professionals. The lack of deep ecommerce expertise often leads to the choice of a solution which doesn’t fit the business. The lack of experience in planning and execution of agile implementation projects leads to long, unpredictable projects, lost funds, and, as a result - a very slow return on ROI.

When software becomes an inhibitor instead of being a solution, the mid-market company loses a critical advantage, which helps to win larger competitors – the speed of change. As the result a company loses more and more market opportunities, cannot implement its strategy with the required velocity, and cannot act proactively - just because of a low platform adoption speed.

Implementation budgets are often tight, and mid-market companies often don’t have easily available resources (free cash flow). It means that every time the project goes over budget, management should either freeze the project until money is available or sacrifice other investments to allow project to continue. Both decisions are painful decisions which slow a company's growth.

Sweden's Proffsmagasinet is a leading e-commerce company in the Nordic region that provides tools, laser and measuring apparatus and other equipment for professionals in the building trade with multiple payment and delivery options online.
The old system couldn’t keep up with such fast growth and Proffsmagasinet needed to implement lots of new systems where the e-commerce platform would be the core. The e-commerce platform needed to be able to easily integrate with Proffsmagasinet's ERP system and other third-party systems.

Proffsmagasinet wanted to be able to customize the platform according to their needs and current business opportunities. The new platform also needed to be able to automatically scale up and down depending on spikes in traffic during campaigns. In addition, the project needed to stay within a limited budget.

All of Proffsmagasinet's requirements are now live on Virto Commerce's platform, which has the required standard plus exclusive features and is fully controlled, customized and adapted by Proffsmagasinet. The new solution is fully cloud-based and features a new DevOps process, and a module system  that allows updating in small independent pieces.

The new system allows for easy addition of new channels in the same channels or new ones, and enables addition of new channels in same or new regions with an access to the shared catalog that can be easily updated and used across the business.
