Virto Atomic Architecture™
What is Virto Atomic Architecture™?
Virto Atomic Architecture™ is an API-first, headless and modular technology that powers Virto’s Commerce Innovation Platform, a managed composable commerce platform.
Applying atomic design, Atomic Architecture™ consists of composable elements: from smallest atoms to bigger molecules, then larger cells, and fully functional ecommerce solutions or organisms, all existing in the Virto Cloud environment and working together to create an effective ecommerce solution architecture.
Virto Atomic Architecture™ Breakdown
Using Atomic design, i.e., atoms, molecules, cells, and organisms, as an analogy, Atomic Architecture™ presents a composition of self-contained modules put together to increase the business value of your enterprise.
Atoms
A building block representing core principles and design patterns.
Examples: Modularity, API-first, Security, Caching, Events.
Molecules
A group of two or more atoms built with a single responsibility principle to handle a specific job. Molecules communicate between each other via API.
Examples: Catalog, Pricing, Inventory, Search, Event Bus.
Cells
A set of molecules combined into a high-performance functional unit of an ecommerce ecosystem to solve a complete business scenario.
Examples: Digital Catalog, Order Management, Vendor Management.
Organisms
A combination of cells representing a custom ecommerce solution as end-users see it.
Example: Composable eCommerce Solution.

Extend any module with your own logic through extension points. Updates leave your code untouched, and the platform checks that every module still fits each time it starts. Read how this differs from MACH.

Your Questions, Answered
They stay where they are. Customizations attach to modules through extension points rather than by editing the modules themselves, so a platform update goes around them, and a release that changes a contract comes with a migration guide. Notions Marketing, for example, runs 20+ targeted module extensions across orders, search, pricing, customer and inventory, all isolated from the core so platform updates don’t break them.
No. It applies microservices principles, with separate capabilities that have their own data, logic and APIs, inside one extensible platform rather than as separately deployed services. You get independent modules without having to run and coordinate dozens of services.
Yes. Custom modules follow the same structure as Virto’s own: they declare what they depend on, extend the platform through published extension points and appear in the admin interface, without changing the platform’s code.
No. The base installation is minimal, and you install only the modules your solution needs. You can even run the platform as a single capability, such as a pricing or promotions engine, inside a larger system, then add more modules later as the business grows.
Stable bundles are released about every three months. Each one is tested as a set before it ships, and if a change breaks compatibility, the release includes a migration guide. Teams that want new features sooner can choose the more frequent edge releases instead.
