We’re starting 2026 with an important milestone.
Virto Commerce is proud to announce that we are a Founding Member of the Commerce Operations Foundation (COF), making this our first technology alliance of 2026.
The Commerce Operations Foundation is a newly established, vendor-neutral nonprofit organization created to advance open standards for modern commerce operations. Its mission is to address one of the most persistent challenges in commerce today: the lack of a shared, interoperable standard between selling channels and fulfillment systems.
Commerce has evolved far beyond the traditional storefront. Orders now originate from marketplaces, B2B portals, social platforms, and increasingly from AI-powered interfaces. At the same time, fulfillment has become more complex, spanning internal warehouses, third-party logistics providers, carriers, and global supply networks.
Despite this complexity, most commerce systems still rely on brittle, point-to-point integrations that were never designed for today’s scale or speed. Every new selling channel or fulfillment partner increases operational friction, slows innovation, and raises long-term risk.
The Commerce Operations Foundation was created to solve this gap through its first open specification: Order Network eXchange.
By establishing a common standard, the Foundation aims to make commerce operations more interoperable, resilient, and adaptable to the next generation of digital and agentic commerce.
Virto Commerce was built on the belief that open, composable architectures, combined with flexible integration approaches, outperform closed, monolithic systems in complex B2B environments. As commerce ecosystems grow more distributed, the need for shared standards becomes critical, and not just for flexibility, but for long-term sustainability.
At Virto Commerce, we deliberately avoid rigid, end-to-end integrations. Instead, we focus on flexible, middleware-driven integration patterns that allow each business to configure the optimal combination of systems for its specific operational needs — without being locked into a fixed ecosystem.
Becoming a Founding Member of the Commerce Operations Foundation reflects our commitment to:
Order Network eXchange aligns closely with Virto Commerce’s approach to composable commerce: clearly defined responsibilities, clean system boundaries, and the ability to evolve without destabilizing the entire ecosystem.
The Commerce Operations Foundation brings together a broad group of technology providers, brands, and logistics leaders across commerce and fulfillment. Together, its founding members represent more than $1 trillion in combined annual GMV, underscoring the scale and urgency of this initiative.
By participating as a Founding Member, Virto Commerce will contribute to the evolution of Order Network eXchange and help ensure that the standard remains open, vendor-neutral, and grounded in real-world operational needs — particularly for complex B2B and enterprise commerce scenarios.
As AI continues to reshape how commerce experiences are built and how orders are initiated, the operational backbone behind those orders must evolve just as quickly. Open standards like Order Network eXchange play a critical role in ensuring that innovation at the frontend can be fulfilled reliably at the backend.
We’re excited to collaborate with the Commerce Operations Foundation and its members to help shape the future of interoperable, composable commerce operations.
